Description
The bear is considered Guardian of the West by the Zuni, and they represent strength, courage, and healing and protection. Wonderfully carved, this bear fetish is hand carved from Labradorite. Labradorite is a member of the Feldspar family and is treasured for its remarkable play of color, known as labradorescence. This luminous specimen is filled with hues of blues and greys. Labradorite also has natural fracturing, giving it beauty and character in the stone. It also changes in different lighting and at different angles. (I take photos in a naturally lit, sunny room). Hand made by Zuni fetish carver, Brian Yatsattie.

Zuni fetishes are carvings made from various materials by the Zuni people. Traditionally, fetishes served a ceremonial purpose for their creators and they represented animals and figures that were part of their culture. Today, as a form of Native American Art, they are sold to collectors worldwide. With a myriad of materials like turquoise, shell, jet, marble, serpentine, and much more, Zuni fetish carvers are able to create carvings in a style of their own.
