Description
This wonderful pottery ornament was created by Navajo potter Ronald Smith. Navajo pottery is is made through a process by which clay is poured into a mold, hand painted and hand etched by the potter, and then fired in a kiln. Each piece of pottery is beautiful and unique. Ronald designed this pottery ornament well, with attractive colors that compliment the etched design.

Although Navajo potters learned the art of pottery making from the Pueblo people, they have developed their own distinctive pottery style. Traditionally, Navajo pottery had little or no design. The beauty of the clay and the markings, or fire clouds, from firing, was showcased. Currently, Navajo pottery is not confined to traditional techniques and Navajo potters are experiencing new and creative approaches. Some traditionally designed, some etched or painted brightly, and some thrown in the fire with horse hair, but melted pinon pitch should be applied on Navajo pottery to give it a glossy finish.

Within the Jemez Pueblo there are many exceptional potters. The work is generally characterized by the buff and red clays used, and the range of styles and subjects. Storyteller, figures, sgrafitto designs, wedding vases, and melon pots are a few of their favorites. Before the arrival of the Spanish, Jemez was known for its traditional black-on-white ware, but production of this type of pottery died out in the early 18th century. There was a revival of Jemez pottery-making in the early 20th century inspired and influenced by Zia pottery designs, but it was not until the 1960’s and 70’s that a significant number of Jemez potters began producing high-quality work using traditional methods.
