NATIVE AMERICAN ZUNI FIRE GOD BY RODERICK QUAM

Return to Previous Page
Description

Description

Zuni artist Roderick Quam created this fabulous Fire God Kachina.  Roderick yields to the natural shape of cottonwood root in order to create this wonderfully carved Kachina.  This carving would be a great addition to your kachina or Native American art collection.  Signed

5  7/8″ tall x 1  1/2″ long x 1  1/8” wide

The Zuni Fire God or the Shulawitsi Kachina is almost an exact duplicate of the Hopi Kokosori, but he is not related to Kokosori.  A young boy who is innocent and pure of heart usually performs him.  He carries a fire stick, signifying his responsibility as caretaker of one of the important physical elements of the universe fire.  The Zuni Fire God is black with multi-colored dots, signifying sparks.  He is sometimes also linked to the sun, another source of life-giving warmth.  This kachina appears in Zuni, at the time of the winter solstice Shalako ceremony.
