NATIVE AMERICAN GAMBLER KACHINA BY JEROME NEQUATEWA

Description

Description

Half Hopi, half Zuni Jerome Nequatewa was raised with the knowledge of the culture and customs of both the Hopi and the Zuni.  Jerome was taught to carve by his father, the late Harold Nequatewa.  Jerome’s kachinas are delicately carved, showing attention to movement and detail.

The Gambler Kachina represents the people of Laguna Pueblo.  He appears in summer and night dances.  During the dances he carries rings in one hand and a stick in the other.  He throws the rings in the air one at a time and tries to catch them on his stick. When he gets all his rings on the stick he can go home.  This is the gamble.

Jerome yields to the natural shape of cottonwood root in order to create this wonderfully carved Gambler Kachina.  This marvelous carving would be a great addition to your kachina or Native American art collection.  Signed
