LABRADORITE MAIDEN BY TODD WESTIKA ZUNI FETISH

Return to Previous Page
Description

Description

Handmade by Zuni fetish carver Todd Westika, this Maiden fetish is a wonderful addition to your Native American art or Zuni fetish collection.  The Corn Maiden is an important figure in Pueblo culture, bringing a good harvest to feed the people.  Made out of labradorite and decorated with silver and turquoise.  Labradorite is a member of the Feldspar family and is treasured for its remarkable play of color, known as labradorescence.  This luminous specimen is filled with hues of blues and greys.  Labradorite also has natural fracturing,  giving it beauty and character in the stone.  It also changes in different lighting and at different angles. (I take photos in a naturally lit, sunny room)   Signed.

4  1/2” tall x 1  1/4” long x 1/2″ wide

Zuni fetishes are carvings made from various materials by the Zuni people.  Traditionally, fetishes served a ceremonial purpose for their creators and they represented animals and figures that were part of their culture.  Today, as a form of Native American Art, they are sold to collectors worldwide.  With a myriad of materials like turquoise, shell, jet, marble, serpentine, and much more, Zuni fetish carvers are able to create carvings in a style of their own.
