HOPI SHALAKO KACHINA BY TYSON NEQUATEWA NATIVE AMERICAN

Description

Description

Hopi Kachina carver, Tyson Nequatewa has been creating kachinas for over 40 years.  Over the years, he has won many awards for his work.   Tyson expertly carves each kachina out of the root of a cottonwood tree with an amazing amount of detail and precision.   Each kachina that Tyson carves, has a highly detailed corn body.

The Shalako run back and forth all year long carrying messages, and when they leave, they carry prayers for rain with them.  The Shalako Ceremony is performed in late November or early December and takes place after the crops are in.  This ceremony is the most important event of the year for Zunis.  Because the Shalako are messengers to the gods, their departure at the ceremony is the final prayer for rain to fill the rivers, wells and springs before summer comes.  An exquisite addition to your Native American art or Hopi Kachina collection.  Signed
