CROW KACHINA BY JEROME NEQUATEWA NATIVE AMERICAN

Description

Description

Half Hopi, half Zuni Jerome Nequatewa was raised with the knowledge of the culture and customs of both the Hopi and the Zuni.  Jerome was taught to carve by his father, the late Harold Nequatewa.  Jerome’s kachinas are delicately carved, showing attention to movement and detail.

The Angwusi or Crow Kachina is usually seen teaming up with the Lizard Kachinas and the Owl Kachinas during the Soyohim Ceremany. Their main function is to keep the clowns in line. He would join the other kachinas in chastising the actions of the clown until the clowns got too far. Then, he would punish them with the whips he carries. All animals are an important part of the Hopi culture, they are believed to provide guidance, health, and protection.

Jerome yields to the natural shape of cottonwood root in order to create this wonderfully carved Crow Kachina.  This exquisite carving would be a great addition to your kachina or Native American art collection.  Signed
